Labour must rethink Winter Fuel Payment decision

It has been two months since the general election, and Labour is now in power. I was shocked by their abrupt decision regarding the Winter Fuel Payment, which now will only be available to individuals receiving Pension Credit or certain other means-tested benefits.

According to research from Age UK, this change could result in as many as two million pensioners not receiving the support they need, which could lead to serious difficulties. A poll conducted for the Liberal Democrats revealed that over half (55%) of UK pensioners surveyed are likely to heat their homes less this winter, and four in ten may cut back on other ‘essentials’.

I understand that the government feels it must make difficult financial decisions. But making such a significant change suddenly and without consultation is wrong. While some pensioners may have sufficient income, many others are just above the threshold to qualify for benefits that would make them eligible for this payment meaning they will lose out. Cutting back on heating isn’t just about comfort; it can lead to serious health risks for vulnerable individuals.

If you believe the government should reconsider, Age UK is running a petition at: Save the Winter Fuel Payment.

If you or someone you know is a pensioner, check eligibility for Pension Credit and other benefits. Age UK offers helpful information and an online benefits calculator at: Pension Credit Advice.
